3 Book Girls is the book club podcast you didn't know you were missing. If you and your best friends got together every week to talk about books, it would probably sound a lot like 3 Book Girls. From Jesmyn Ward's National Book Award-winning Sing, Unburied, Sing to the various sports sub-genres of romance, nothing is off limits here. If you like your book reviews with a side of snark, you can find 3 Book Girls Soundcloud, Audioboom, and iTunes, and on Twitter.
Here we talk to them about how their podcast came to be, what advice they have for aspiring podcasters, and their future plans for 3 Book Girls.
How did 3 Book Girls come to be?
Nicole: Martha and I would always talk about books every time we would see each other in the office. One day I told Martha we should start a podcast. Martha asked Vonnie and we became 3 Book Girls.
Your relationships and chemistry are so integral to the podcast. How did you all meet?
Vonnie: Martha and I have been friends for about 11 years after our sons became friends. We bonded over early morning soccer games often talking about books. Nicole and Martha are coworkers and so are me and Jessica. We have all spent quality company time pondering why there aren't more book readers in the office.
What is your favorite episode?
Vonnie: Off the top of my head I would have to say episode 40. I laughed so hard making that episode I felt like I had done an ab workout.
Martha: If I have to choose I would say episode 38 with Mary Anna Evans. That felt like a milestone for us.
Jessica: My favorite episode has to be one where we had Justin as a guest or my dad, Sean.
How has the podcast changed since you started?
We have become much more comfortable with each other as our podcast has grown. We also are able to feature more guests and have begun to branch out into different genres.
Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to start a podcast?
Be patient and consistent, establishing an online presence takes time. Having decent recording equipment helps as well. Podcasting is one of the greatest formats to reach an audience because you can be personal and interact with your listeners through social media.
What podcasts do you all listen to, or what podcasts inspired 3 Book Girls?
Vonnie: I hadn't listened to many podcasts before researching our podcast
Martha: I had listened to NPR's Science Friday but never anything like ours. We had to make it up as we went along. We created what we wanted to hear. "The greatest book club you never knew you were missing."
What upcoming book releases are you most looking forward to?
Nicole: All of them! Just kidding. But honestly I wouldn't know where to begin. I just got a copy of Our Kind of Cruelty by Araminta Hall and I am pretty excited to dig into it. It will be released May 8th. Lethal White by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling's pseudonym) is also rumored to be coming out in the next year or two.
Vonnie: Christopher Moore has a book coming out called Noir. There's also another WWII book called The Tattoo Artist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris. That should be coming out in September, I do love my war books!
Martha: The President is Missing by Bill Clinton and James Patterson. Seriously, Bill Clinton has inside information about the White House AND he has a genius IQ!
What plans do you have for 3 Book Girls in the future?
We would like to start our own website and increase our listening audience. After that, world domination ... one book at a time.
